Education

September 4, 2008 – 3:37 pm

In 1869, Costa Rica became one of the first in the world to make education both free and obligatory. Since then, our rulers have placed great importance in the expansion of primary and secondary education, even in the most remote areas. Starting in the 1970s, Costa Rica invests more than 25% of its national budget on education.

Thanks to these and to ongoing reforms, Costa Ricans enjoy a high level of education and one of the highest literacy rates in the world: 96%

Primary education is obligatory, and both preschool and high school are free. There are both state and private universities.

The State system includes learning institutions at all levels and the network of public schools is dispersed into the far corners of the territory.
