Alajuela the City of the Mangoes

Alajuela is one of the most important cities in Costa Rica. The International Airport SJO (Juan Santamaria) is located here but some people do not realize that the main International Airport of Costa Rica is in Alajuela and not in San Jose.

Alajuela has a very nice climate. The average temperature is between 22 and 24 Degrees Celsius (71 and 75 Fahrenheit). In the summertime it might get a little warmer at times.

Alajuela makes a more logical home base for most travellers than San Jose as it is much closer to the airport, beaches, Arenal area and many other important destinations. It offers great night life, shopping, a lot of car rental options, hotels and a very historic past.

Alajuela is known as the “City of the Mangoes”.
